Homemade Thank-You Present for Art Teachers

Hey guys,

On Friday I graduate from Year 11 and I am making some cupcakes to give to our head of year, who is also our art teacher. This is a really cute idea and I'm going to show you how to make them :) These cupcakes are best for your art teacher because they look like an art palette because there are rainbow colours and are super easy to make. This is a really cute idea because we signed the palette and put the cupcakes on top, so when the cupcakes are gone, she has a palette and paintbrush to remember us all by :)

Cupcakes differ slightly to recipe, but its the same recipe. I decided to add a pink later.

For the Sponge:

70g butter, softened
70g caster sugar
70g self raising flour
1 medium egg
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp baking powder

To decorate:

Food Colouring: Red, Yellow, Green and Blue
70g butter, softened
140g icing sugar
1-2 tablespoons milk

To present:

Wooden artists palette
Clay paintbrush

Other essentials:

6 cupcake cases
Large mixing bowl
Wooden Spoon
Metal Spoon
6 small bowls

Method:

1) Preheat oven to Gas Mark 4

2) Gather your equipment and ingredients. Tip: Your equipment will get dirty, obviously, so to keep them clean, fill a jug with warm water mixed with Fairy Liquid. The liquid will clean your tools so they are clean when you need them next.

3) Measure out your butter and cut into small cubes. The butter is better softened so leave out all day or overnight. It makes a huge difference! Add this to the bowl.

4) Add the caster sugar to the butter and use the wooden spoon to cream it together. Use the back of the spoon to do this. Put the spoon in the jug to clean it.

5) Crack the egg and add the yolk and egg white. Take your wooden spoon again and mix it in really well. Sprinkle a few drops of vanilla essence or other flavouring if you want

6) Measure out the flour and sift it in to the bowl. Add the baking powder and use the metal spoon to fold it in. Don't beat it to hard because it will ruin your cakes. Try to get the mixture as high out of the bowl - without decorating the kitchen - as you can so plenty of air gets into it.

7) Divide between the six cupcake cases lined up in a baking tray. Put in the oven for 10 to 20 minutes. Tip: You'll know when the cupcakes are done from two ways: If you touch the sponge it will bounce back up or insert a cocktail stick; it will come out clear if the cake is completely cooked.

8) Take the cakes out to cool.

9) While the cakes are cooling, you can start with your buttercream icing. Mix together the butter and caster sugar. Add a little milk if you want. It is important not to make it too buttery or too sugary. The icing is a vital part of the cake.

10) Divide the buttercream between six smaller bowls, plastic ones that you can throw away are best. In one bowl, add a few drops of red food colouring. In another, add the yellow, then the blue, then green. In the final two bowls, we need to create purple and orange. Mix some red and yellow together to make it turn orange and mix red and blue to make purple.

11) Make sure the cakes are COMPLETELY cool before you ice them. Cover the cupcakes with one colour. Take the palette, here at school we signed the palette and stuck a paintbrush on. Arrange the cupcakes in this order: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple.

12) Present them to your art teacher. Hopefully, our teacher will love them, and hopefully yours will too!

I hope you guys liked this recipe and I will blog again soon :)
