How to Use Face Paints
For an upcoming Halloween tutorial I will be using face paints and I have never used face paints before then so to fit into that I decided to create a guide of the basic steps of how to use face paints. Generally, the idea is quite simple but there are some things to consider when using them. These tips are from the Snazaroo face paint website but are the same for all types of paints from different brands.
Before you start, check that the person you are working on has no skin allergies or infections. This is something you should do even before applying makeup on someone for the first time. Don't paint someone's face if they have any skin problem. If you are unsure, what you need to do is test it on the back of their wrist and if there is no reaction development after around 60 minutes then you are fine to continue. This is important especially if you are doing this for children.
Make sure that the face paints are presented with clean materials such as a towel and you need to have a good amount of water in a cup or a bowl to wash brushes or sponges between people. Make sure you have a selection of brushes and sponges that differ in sizes.
The best thing about face paints is that it doesn't require any special base like makeup does. Although make sure that the face is completely matte and dry otherwise it affects the quality of the paint. If the face paint you are using is water based it is best applied on clean and dry skin.
Like when applying makeup, clip back hair to avoid it getting in the way of paint.
Use a damp sponge to apply the base of the paint. The sponge will apply the paint streaky if its too wet so squeeze out as much excess water as possible. If you want a deeper or darker colour, apply a second coat on top of the base once it is dry.
Like with makeup, apply the lightest colour first if you are using a variety of colours. When using a brush, keep strokes even and try to avoid the temptation to sketch.
Just remember that it takes practise to be able to get it right, so practise a few times before the real thing. It's like applying makeup for the first time.
When storing or using the kit, keep it in a cool place out of sunlight. Always make sure your materials and face paint containers are cleaned at the end of every session. Store your materials in a dry clean state with lids on all containers.
When finishing a session, wipe any excess moisture from the surface of the paints and store with the lids on.
Brushes should be rinsed well in hot water and left to dry before putting away.
Sponges should be washed well in hot soapy water and left to dry before putting away.
Face paint which has been used for more than eighteen months should be discarded.
Discard badly stained or damaged brushes and sponges.
I hope this helped you if you want to start using face paints or are a beginner
